<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I'm going a little deeper into my method here. The first image is a photograph of the flowers reduced to 16 colours in Paint Shop Pro, with a 10 x 8 grid imposed (my support will be a 10 x 8 in. piece of Pastelmat).</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8qwmMq-F4pc1TkOFcOS58PPQl6uf1FMBfGP2ItmiquLzAzy6vAVwTt_-OsunI6SVvmwjHoEH2l52GfwQRtwoTDiBL_Yla8Cxg4lqfDeQvgBq9ky6qcQP6MGFrBL1aDZT31mRwrZHUng/s1600/Screenshot+2019-09-10+20.58.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="902" data-original-width="723" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8qwmMq-F4pc1TkOFcOS58PPQl6uf1FMBfGP2ItmiquLzAzy6vAVwTt_-OsunI6SVvmwjHoEH2l52GfwQRtwoTDiBL_Yla8Cxg4lqfDeQvgBq9ky6qcQP6MGFrBL1aDZT31mRwrZHUng/s320/Screenshot+2019-09-10+20.58.jpg" width="256" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Now you can use the colour palette in Paint Shop to make a swatch, so that the underpainting is reduced in complexity of colour although the tonal range is not altered.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I usually select a subset of soft pastels to cover all potential colours and values in a painting. This is the selection, and the "nuancier". So I took some pictures of this Hibiscus Blue Bird (and a Campsis or Trumpet flower) and decided to paint it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first picture shows the support, some scribbled petals, and a colour chart of the few pastels used to get me to this point - CarbOthello in the main.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg21X17psqaS6TZb9iqfwLv5ypogTKOqHwgCF_omxJuxC7DISzO4Dfctoa6z-xof4J_83tpJuch8t915hq00j1z0U9Vow9RYtLKnzNd5E2fwncwkIYay2NMlTRpGzqP7-7pvivXLJMNGQ/s1600/IMG_20190904_124156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg21X17psqaS6TZb9iqfwLv5ypogTKOqHwgCF_omxJuxC7DISzO4Dfctoa6z-xof4J_83tpJuch8t915hq00j1z0U9Vow9RYtLKnzNd5E2fwncwkIYay2NMlTRpGzqP7-7pvivXLJMNGQ/s320/IMG_20190904_124156.jpg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The pencils are fine for initial drawing, but not for painting, with the exception of the stigmas and pistil in the flower's centre. After checking all my blues, I decided on Sennelier 334, 335 and 336 as being the most suitable for colour and for a subtle movement of tone within the hue.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRdd-nhSoWU8UVC36uV4PxlhjpknyKpEh4db1Z-X0ekypZNratvOuLYilQZZPwYhPCI2FsWOKMKKns0PCM5nkAF0_KbEiA2oYU-ij6LyvMHSDrhHBfenFHSeQ7bJh4We8Ms1LLYlgdfA/s1600/IMG_20190905_120440__01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1338" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRdd-nhSoWU8UVC36uV4PxlhjpknyKpEh4db1Z-X0ekypZNratvOuLYilQZZPwYhPCI2FsWOKMKKns0PCM5nkAF0_KbEiA2oYU-ij6LyvMHSDrhHBfenFHSeQ7bJh4We8Ms1LLYlgdfA/s320/IMG_20190905_120440__01.jpg" width="266" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The dark centre was put in using Unison, and all the raindrops were outlined. The centre was enhanced with some subtle touches of very dark red from Roché. Once the petals were near completion I put in some Sennelier 434 dark blue to see how the background would show up the bloom.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It only remained to finish the leaves - not too much detail needed here - finish the background, and sign! The finished piece is on Pastelmat, 10 x 8 ins or 25 x 20 cms.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What are the essential elements that make up a painting? In
no particular order, composition, drawing, perspective, values, edges, colour –
all of these contribute to the outcome. Edges are arguably the least
appreciated of these, but contribute greatly to the three-dimensionality of a painting
that aims at being representational.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I was re-reading Charles Sovek’s “Catching Light in your
Paintings” recently, in which he lists the four kinds of edges – Hard, Firm, Soft,
and Lost.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hard, and Lost, are probably the
easiest on figure out.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hard edges are clear, well-lit, in focus, and catch the eye.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Lost edges are valuable in all styles for taking bits of the
picture out of focus, in contrast <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>with
the bits that are sharp and meant to take the attention. Lost edges
automatically occur when two edges share the same dark tone, even if the
colours are different. I find them especially useful for getting edges that are
on the shadow side lost in the dark background that l often use. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Soft edges occur when there is a transition of colour or
value (tone) with no distinct margin – you can simply soften adjacent edges by
blurring them or blending them together. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Firm edges are somewhere between hard and soft -<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>a distinct transition, but clearly neither
sharp nor blurred.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

firm to soft passages. Likewise for the Tilley lamp, specially the top.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I can't resist brass, and the tea urn was a lovely large surface to paint. I associated the two, and put in a lemon for a bright link and reflection.<br />
First off, I scribbled in some undercolours with pencils and hard pastels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEJBXqLAc__wah-SsZPK9mjxN4jai3CRSOoaIBmYJcvvnIHLxID_ymXZtuxXHsrpb7fCOpCIae3BzjXvR0EG_oGdEY4cvge-83DJ7-iP2NeE5dzFksPlqQYHArca4JrkH36AFyMD0AaA/s1600/IMG_20190118_134035%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1304" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEJBXqLAc__wah-SsZPK9mjxN4jai3CRSOoaIBmYJcvvnIHLxID_ymXZtuxXHsrpb7fCOpCIae3BzjXvR0EG_oGdEY4cvge-83DJ7-iP2NeE5dzFksPlqQYHArca4JrkH36AFyMD0AaA/s400/IMG_20190118_134035%257E2.jpg" width="324" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Based on the undercoat, I chose a selection of pastels that would be the main workhorses for the next phase. As you might be able to make out, it's a varied range of ochres, yellows, and umbers, and draws from Artisan Pastellier, Blue Mountain (the square ones), Sennelier, Rembrandt and a few Caran d'Ache. You can make out a colour reference on top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQhzFLyYCkaJKXy21LvMz7i9j-HTDsxYlRrNDXd0G79857wdB-xsYO8ajUNoMEXmmAsMpRkmfrFeMz02Q2ebkC4xkCy6t4e5BqtN2myeocH1NBLfjjsZBK9cDmAHUkMvqoYedW74FRGQ/s1600/IMG_20190127_115050%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1540" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQhzFLyYCkaJKXy21LvMz7i9j-HTDsxYlRrNDXd0G79857wdB-xsYO8ajUNoMEXmmAsMpRkmfrFeMz02Q2ebkC4xkCy6t4e5BqtN2myeocH1NBLfjjsZBK9cDmAHUkMvqoYedW74FRGQ/s320/IMG_20190127_115050%257E2.jpg" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
Working from the top left, I started with the urn.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8eo-kWUnPicM_NwSwkQyBG7mp3EqyvLIAU3Ya4Tz5Q5dA_MBX2NTK5fV4s-EsZyMgVbXVkt3ithF9z0EarPFnCHfU-i5H5N8BU1H2JH04AJvXUBHfp0S2GLc4DnngA1YWbGpbtLs-sg/s1600/IMG_20190129_124630%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1408" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8eo-kWUnPicM_NwSwkQyBG7mp3EqyvLIAU3Ya4Tz5Q5dA_MBX2NTK5fV4s-EsZyMgVbXVkt3ithF9z0EarPFnCHfU-i5H5N8BU1H2JH04AJvXUBHfp0S2GLc4DnngA1YWbGpbtLs-sg/s400/IMG_20190129_124630%257E2.jpg" width="351" /></a></div>
<br />
First overcoat on the lemon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTnrkHN8KBo9HgyTmXfPgnRt2h99nYMNGQa_QBEwEFFO55tpT17bzJZNIF_0h30NpakVPYjOjDLJIRnogf1q1pkU8x9uZT4wEfxyPOPMktb2tF4JiZnukSI9grcY3UnHdx0Sk4HX-3Mg/s1600/IMG_20190209_125243%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1305" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTnrkHN8KBo9HgyTmXfPgnRt2h99nYMNGQa_QBEwEFFO55tpT17bzJZNIF_0h30NpakVPYjOjDLJIRnogf1q1pkU8x9uZT4wEfxyPOPMktb2tF4JiZnukSI9grcY3UnHdx0Sk4HX-3Mg/s400/IMG_20190209_125243%257E2.jpg" width="326" /></a></div>
<br />
The lemon is large and bright, so I needed to check its value and chroma against the mooted background colour (Sennelier dark greens 178 and 179). Also the light green in the lamp.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSH3OS-BnqJrF7i2_1GD9W02m4ZLe9LAhO1M7upZd-I2iEiboqgL63Q9DQt-j2GPl7g7bu2oGKFAd0YC5JWZkOOzDq7tSEngrSBgmAMhJ6Ynl7CcMzx-saCdHgY6mXy1QbphRsnKBtwA/s1600/IMG_20190211_132513%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1353" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSH3OS-BnqJrF7i2_1GD9W02m4ZLe9LAhO1M7upZd-I2iEiboqgL63Q9DQt-j2GPl7g7bu2oGKFAd0YC5JWZkOOzDq7tSEngrSBgmAMhJ6Ynl7CcMzx-saCdHgY6mXy1QbphRsnKBtwA/s400/IMG_20190211_132513%257E2.jpg" width="337" /></a></div>
<br />
The lemon was too light in value overall, so that needed adjustment.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWXVCtC3Gp2W7tjv40vPybDa5DEFaNd7ZTqcUueLveaZF2WNBZOZ73RhEylJZVlfRcGxnUdNp-Kr_393E5SDAyFka2wSEQ0kaTaDzquJPR_0U_vdpUF5X3Wz49cpMIXP_zUXSl4x3N4w/s1600/IMG_20190303_134122%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1371" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWXVCtC3Gp2W7tjv40vPybDa5DEFaNd7ZTqcUueLveaZF2WNBZOZ73RhEylJZVlfRcGxnUdNp-Kr_393E5SDAyFka2wSEQ0kaTaDzquJPR_0U_vdpUF5X3Wz49cpMIXP_zUXSl4x3N4w/s400/IMG_20190303_134122%257E2.jpg" width="342" /></a></div>
<br />
The background was completed, with a contrasting dark for the surface on which the objects were placed. Reflections were painted in, and this is when I realised I had a painting 42 cm wide by 48 cm high, with a lot of empty space on top. So I took off 6 cm from the top to make it square.<br />
<br />

I was just back from France and had very little time to do anything, so I checked some photos of a female giraffe that I had taken a few weeks before in La Palmyre zoo, decided that they were too complex to use in the time available, and looked for a simpler image on the internet.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The photo I used was taken by Karen Pulfer Focht in Memphis zoo in 2008. I secured the photographer's permission to use the image.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You can see the progess from original photo, to using a grid app, and making use of the ground colour and texture on Mi-Teintes Touch paper. I finally painted the background dark blue (Sennelier 463) to conceal the grid lines. The final result is 10 x 8 ins.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">a sketch for a painting of hollyhocks, based on a photograph that I took in France the previous year. I selected in advance the pastels I would need to finish the painting. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is the photograph:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5FQWRGpTteSe2B4Ab8uFbiNZ81nOHYjBXeQ5AJ8_ohXtTeEgIiSXDH38s38iZaQxzQzITFCPNxQGnUgd3vj23xqjLEIg7wFFP9x0KWu34qQGSdt7yEvKjuukGkTe2EwytyU2JCIxrEA/s1600/Hollyhock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5FQWRGpTteSe2B4Ab8uFbiNZ81nOHYjBXeQ5AJ8_ohXtTeEgIiSXDH38s38iZaQxzQzITFCPNxQGnUgd3vj23xqjLEIg7wFFP9x0KWu34qQGSdt7yEvKjuukGkTe2EwytyU2JCIxrEA/s320/Hollyhock.jpg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And this is the selection of pastels: the reds are mainly Schminke and Blue Earth Quinacridone Pink. </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Greens are Sennelier, and you might spot a large violet Artisan Pastellier among them.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Progress was mainly from top to bottom, and left to right, with the stems of the hollyhocks forming a useful divisional map in what was really a mess of abstract shapes.</span><br />

</span> <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> You might also notice some spotting on the flowers in the early stages: this is because I used Sennelier Pastelcard for this painting, and while it is an excellent sanded support, it must not get wet or the tooth falls off! I had left a window open in the studio during a rain shower, and the surface got spattered. Luckily I noticed it before any irreparable damage was done.</span><br />

Manufactured in Japan by an art materials company that has been in business since 1919, Gondola Pastels is a range of 242 colours, hand made in Kyoto, and size (Diameter x Length): 1.2 x 2.1 (cm) / 0.5 x 0.8 (inch)<br />
<br />
They are available from Art Supplies Store, 1-1259-64 Shiomigaoka, Nakago-Cho, Kitaibaraki, Ibaraki 319-1553 JAPAN. The web address is <a href="http://www.art-supplies-store.com/product/6590.php" target="_blank">http://www.art-supplies-store.com/product/6590.php</a></span><br />
<div><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The 242 stick set, in a wooden box, costs $270, which seems good value.<br />
The <a href="http://www.gondola-pastel.com/" target="_blank">manufacturer's web page</a> states: <i>Gondola pastel is Japan's first soft pastel manufacturer that started business in Kyoto in 1919. For 90 years since our establishment, we have carefully created the colors according to the light of Japan one by one by hand.<br />
In 2011, based on the idea of Takiko Inoue, who received the Kyoto Culture Venture Competition First Prize , he created and launched " Kyoto Seki pastel" which gathered the traditional colors of Kyoto.</i></span></div>Oldenbrokehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11236081021728213825noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1468103759317346679.post-64284990342735888112017-02-19T03:38:00.003-08:002017-03-22T00:50:42.184-07:00Henri Roché pastels<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;"><b>Henri Roché Pastels</b> </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For any practising pastellist, the basic rule is that you can never have enough pastels. If you had the the complete Roché set, now over 1200 and counting, you might just have reached that limit!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Roché Pastels have just updated their website to facilitate online purchase, or just to make available to view the complete range in order to see what you don't realise you need, or what is actually available! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">Henri Roché are the oldest extant pastel brand in the world, dating from around 1720 and used by artists such as Rosalba Carriera, and Edward Dégas. At its height in the 1970s, the entire range of Roché pastels exceeded 1800 colours. Today, Isabelle Roché and Margaret Zayer are busy expanding the <a href="http://lamaisondupastel.com/shop/?cat=4" style="color: #999999; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">collection that currently comprises 1201 colours</a>, divided into ranges of nine gradations. Each range is composed of pure colours that are either gradated with white, black, or crossed with another colour.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Manufactured in small quantities, Roché pastels are individually hand-rolled into a form suitable for both bold and detailed work. With exceptionally lightfast pigments and a minimum of binder, the pastels possess a particular texture that allows them to adhere well to a number of supports, as well as display a remarkable intensity and clarity of colour. These are top of the range products, expensive, and not for the beginner. But the quality is superb and the personal service second to none. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The full set of colours is visible</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><a href="https://lamaisondupastel.com/shop/?cat=4" style="color: #999999; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">here on the online shop</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Next you can see the base colours of the lilac flowers, (<b>Derwent </b>pencils in violet shades, and <b>Unison </b>pastels) and some definition being added to outline some blooms. I am also giving some consideration even at this early stage to the background (I'm muttering "purple and gold" to myself here).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The background is being taken over by raw sienna and umber (<b>Rembrandt</b>) and the highlighted outline on the petals is a very light grey from <b>Carb-Othello</b>. There is detail now on the vase, and the tray-cloth has the light direction made clear.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The cabinet top and the red drawers are added and the background completed - as I thought.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I didn't like it . Neither did some of my Facebook artist friends - those who have the courage to contribute useful criticism. So I changed the background to a flat Golden Ochre from <b>Schminke</b>. Signed, and framed.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A word about the composition: the overall shape of the arrangement is a triangle, echoed in the triangular layout of the apples in the colander. As well as that, there are numerous circles and arcs in the piece - the colander <i>and</i> the drainage holes therein; the apples of course; and various circular elements and arcs in the oil lamp. All of these elements help to tie the composition together.</span><br />

I used a full size 70 x 90 sheet of <i>Pastelmat </i>for this one.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The first pair of images shows the line drawing of the outline and internal elements of the design; and the scribbled-in underpainting to start the process of lights, darks and undercolours. Once again, the colour of the support varies in these photos depending on the light source at the time.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaCR6iaK_nPeeMuISwa87Sad3agj5V58scLAT869B06y8fu769dGUl0covj6elyZQHQEkmORN_zwZoRsyRm0jSBm8Yd2pt2p04tuIBLqlXB02w2J_g4AOUcyJL63J9Lx4rhQ1nfGt5Hg/s1600/Dscn9778.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaCR6iaK_nPeeMuISwa87Sad3agj5V58scLAT869B06y8fu769dGUl0covj6elyZQHQEkmORN_zwZoRsyRm0jSBm8Yd2pt2p04tuIBLqlXB02w2J_g4AOUcyJL63J9Lx4rhQ1nfGt5Hg/s400/Dscn9778.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The next images show the process developing, the underpainting is faithful to the values, but not at all to the final colour. I'm using pastel pencils, and <i>Rembrandt </i>pastels at this stage. Some blending has begun, and the ceramic flowers on the lid is quite densely painted, even though the colours will change.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqf7it5MOiCYhaOTqkmp3-bZsAl1rmojZc2rWYunMlRwrRxh-UJam_piHPqVq_7cNEapvpad-wYI_hbWlfRH930-OogXNctu_60ATAOMHaeOWrjWyNkwO9sSLbNhytBH_-w5DLLf_JRA/s1600/Dscn9783.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqf7it5MOiCYhaOTqkmp3-bZsAl1rmojZc2rWYunMlRwrRxh-UJam_piHPqVq_7cNEapvpad-wYI_hbWlfRH930-OogXNctu_60ATAOMHaeOWrjWyNkwO9sSLbNhytBH_-w5DLLf_JRA/s400/Dscn9783.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The flowers have now been rendered in the final colours, using quinacridone pink from <i>Blue Earth</i> pastels. The body of the bowl has begun, mostly with <i>Rembrandt </i>blue grey range,</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The underpainting of the lace area is apparent in the image on the left. There are tans, violets and dark greys blended in that will give life to the upper layers. As the lace is painted, I will draw some areas of detail to give the illusion of overall detail; but the main work is done by lightly dragging very pale neutral pastels by <i>Roché </i>over the coloured base. These pastels, used lightly on their side, give a very effective impression of cloth or material.<br />The second image, of the finished piece, shows the very strong diagonal impact of the painting, also echoed by the lines of shadow in the background. (You can see what a difference a painted background makes, especially as a contrast to a white ceramic object, even if there are no whites anywhere except in the highlights!)</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">One of my collection of decorative (and cheap) porcelain urns, jars, soup tureens, jugs and tea-pots was looking for an idea to add to its appeal, and I happened to buy a packet of macaroon biscuits that were coloured white, yellow, pink, green, and brown. So I thought that they would provide the colour notes to a fairly monochrome jar.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />This is the outline and first infilling of underpainting in hard pastels. The background colour varies only because of the changing light when photographed.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh96MA8Jg5mKhsEr_Kboif4hRvdXrLVe6AqL7ED9Va_ZoJVp-56hZ2tboO9Smyzs0LAPKewYKY6Qzaifr3_7tOVLRcX9JSaJjrmXsDOParKYe04OJFnGjkYKT_mbx6GY8cxr_sStCHMQ/s1600/Dsc01748.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh96MA8Jg5mKhsEr_Kboif4hRvdXrLVe6AqL7ED9Va_ZoJVp-56hZ2tboO9Smyzs0LAPKewYKY6Qzaifr3_7tOVLRcX9JSaJjrmXsDOParKYe04OJFnGjkYKT_mbx6GY8cxr_sStCHMQ/s400/Dsc01748.jpg" /></a><br /><br />It is really unfortunate that the medium gray Pastelmat shows such variation - that's Irish light (and Irish weather) for you, especially in winter.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqDHNuB5c41V_pBOsNbPbjvIpXi0k-VFZEnDOWxgWw8MZiqP6fsO7C0CejcGMyyhO7Y2zQm_FcToeNRUEEYaO4m79bvORuuBGLR1xsMO3I03qW6bSREmFXIbnYo_UjXvvXbCUw_V4YAQ/s1600/Dsc01769.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqDHNuB5c41V_pBOsNbPbjvIpXi0k-VFZEnDOWxgWw8MZiqP6fsO7C0CejcGMyyhO7Y2zQm_FcToeNRUEEYaO4m79bvORuuBGLR1xsMO3I03qW6bSREmFXIbnYo_UjXvvXbCUw_V4YAQ/s400/Dsc01769.jpg" /></a><br /><br />In this pair I have added some of the final background shadow so I can calculate the contrast I wish to achieve.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6EDz_LIIBjk1vFjDHA72Gvo-8jB_IC3OjAc7WFLlv0Rv1CY8b6a2u1MQbWgRpba0kM9k5LetrpGWd7DETKtKrxiF0AFYdQieOvjp2TYxIBOzPgFrqhJW2pnF_qio3hW551lSiq7b1Cw/s1600/Dsc01863.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6EDz_LIIBjk1vFjDHA72Gvo-8jB_IC3OjAc7WFLlv0Rv1CY8b6a2u1MQbWgRpba0kM9k5LetrpGWd7DETKtKrxiF0AFYdQieOvjp2TYxIBOzPgFrqhJW2pnF_qio3hW551lSiq7b1Cw/s400/Dsc01863.jpg" /></a><br /><br />Here I have taped off the effective area on the support to the finished size of 40 x 55 cms. <span style="color: red; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><b>UPDATE 5.5.2016</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Gail Sibley chose this pastel in her April 2016 selection on her <a href="http://www.howtopastel.com/2016/05/aprils-astounding-pastels/" target="_blank">How to Pastel </a>blog, and read the painting beautifully. Here is her commentary:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: "open sans" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 24px;">Deep beautiful darks set off the beauty of this ceramic container. Its carved flowers and intricate design are meticulously recreated with light and shadow. There’s a subtlety of colour not evident on a cursory viewing and it’s a treat to discover these – like the pink in the rose handle, the yellow in the carved piece in the side facing us, the pale blue reflected near the bottom of the tureen, the pale green gleam on the smooth surface of the cover. These colours are repeated in the more obvious macaroons. There’s a lovely contrast between the cold hardness of the porcelain and the soft delectable cookies. A delicious similarity also exists between the smooth and textured parts of both subjects. The off-centre placement of the main event plus the rather daring dominance of the dark background engenders curiosity about the set-up – where is this arrangement to be found and who will be lucky enough to eat those yummy looking macaroons?!</span></span></div>

I finally got around to it last autumn, so here it is - <i>Forte Dux</i> (or <i>Shelf Life</i> - take your pick!)</span><br />

</span> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You can make out some of the colours used along the bottom of the paper. I counted them up at the end, and it came to about 70 different pastel sticks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The finished painting, with the wooden shelf and the concrete background put in. The French flags were already on the ducks, and I left them as a bright note of colour.</span><br />

I knew I had a red cloisonné vase among my bric-a-brac, and an ornate perfume bottle with a pearly stopper. I borrowed the string of pearls to complete the line-up.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIlGZVDzCqjHfPSHSLdMzd5Wl6EY_LcGQ0ZTVZE0hl1fn8NVWzrp8HFt_D-voiFThlpOX3CKNzlIOCEoC3IplRUKpDH4FNNXr8_pPZONxH8bZxlKfXnc5SLs3OVmH4L0__6KhLixnj9Q/s1600/Pearls+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIlGZVDzCqjHfPSHSLdMzd5Wl6EY_LcGQ0ZTVZE0hl1fn8NVWzrp8HFt_D-voiFThlpOX3CKNzlIOCEoC3IplRUKpDH4FNNXr8_pPZONxH8bZxlKfXnc5SLs3OVmH4L0__6KhLixnj9Q/s320/Pearls+1.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The initial sketch was fairly detailed - even to the extent of noting the values within the pearls.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPTrHWwnonvLp0vRxMRK9HJSMOaIJxQEfua_8rovUF_ZQ0lfka010_bJ50a8kh5qcIxTq6W_5y4QBU9n82B8t4cuxpCivXx3kpPLurY1-1XSwKE0JujiMKj2aOGTDOgP8wdYl49VjT9A/s1600/Pearls+2+and+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPTrHWwnonvLp0vRxMRK9HJSMOaIJxQEfua_8rovUF_ZQ0lfka010_bJ50a8kh5qcIxTq6W_5y4QBU9n82B8t4cuxpCivXx3kpPLurY1-1XSwKE0JujiMKj2aOGTDOgP8wdYl49VjT9A/s400/Pearls+2+and+3.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I start to fill in the underpainting with hard pastels - <i>Rembrandt</i> and <i>Caran d'Ache</i>, and <i>Carbothello </i>Pencils. The underpainting will inform the finished work and serves as a roadmap for it, but they certainly not the hues that will be apparent.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYkypxYomJVhE0QZZ8ZyS8n9OZX_jp7teHXOrHWOq0GqK2jfl4JEYchYEqNX19xinqibaDyIho_o7c4DGQb3YvnkU8sKKEa6GuXwiHJbK6RB2xtKvraz0IrRiGYNFcIKKvAsXWIanaRw/s1600/Pearls+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYkypxYomJVhE0QZZ8ZyS8n9OZX_jp7teHXOrHWOq0GqK2jfl4JEYchYEqNX19xinqibaDyIho_o7c4DGQb3YvnkU8sKKEa6GuXwiHJbK6RB2xtKvraz0IrRiGYNFcIKKvAsXWIanaRw/s320/Pearls+4.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A close-up on the pearls shows the sketchy ones to the right, and on the left the refining of the image; there are at least five colours painted into the pearls! I used <i>Schminke </i>neutral greys, which are quite warm, and a light ochre pencil. Blending was achieved with a fine colour shaper.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">On the left the pearls are still unfinished, and the silver box not fully defined. On the right, the pearls are pretty well complete, and the design on the box clarified. I have indicated my horizon line too. The dark reds for the jar and box lining were dark carmine from <i>Caran d'Ache,</i> and madder lake by <i>Schminke</i>; the darkest red in the fold of the velvet was "lies de vin" from <i>Henri Roché</i>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Final image shows the background filled in, and the reflections in the foreground were completed. The reflected pearls are much cooler in tone than the main image. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Note there are three distinct values in the shadow area under the jewellery box :- <br />1. the cast shadow of the box gets most ambient light. <br />2. the cast shadow of the lid is effectively a shadow ON a shadow! <br />3. The reflection of the underside of the lid gets the least light and so is the darkest dark.</span><br />

Corkonians will remember the Turkish Delight manufactured by Harutun Batmazian, an Armenian immigrant who left the perils of the Ottoman Empire behind him and arrived in Cork, Ireland, around the time of the International Exhibition of 1902-3 to set up his famous sweet shop on MacCurtain Street in Cork, which was emblazoned 'Hadji Bey et Cie'. The business eventually declined following the retirement of Harutun's son Eddie in the 1970's and the Hadji Bey brand became but a faint memory. Until revived by L.C. Confectionery in Newbridge, Co. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Further infill of the background allows me to estimate the relative values of the piece overall. I have worked from left to right, and top to bottom. The sweets were underpainted with yellow and pinks, and very pale tints of these colours were glazed on top. Some almost-white pastel was scraped and drifted over the sweets to create a sugary effect. Some loose pieces of "sugar" fell onto the plate. The background dark was intensified. Only the reflections of the plates remain to finish. Meanwhile the sugar/oil in Turkish Delight has been absorbed by the paper bag and unfortunately has become inedible!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We have an abundance of bluebells in our garden; they grow with enthusiasm and spread themselves about, both the blue and the white varieties. I wanted to paint some in a little brass jug, to get the colour harmony between the complementaries. After trying out some other sundry objects in my collection of bric-a-brac, I decided to put the brass jug on a little Buddhist stand, and used a cloisonné snail as a whimsical note.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is the initial sketch, which as you can see is very cursory, and a fill-in with basic colour and values.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnXgTC6C0tJUevlL58-gsWqG5W8axc__DaK4jWo11juOGmuK8NMlUwmro1nUOLaSSTEbalhhy8QCtAsBxMkZdSq88n7EwqD_Se6Cf0OSrELUB_tfzv7JGF_s5Np-TNK3497loyTxTT7w/s1600/Bluebells+1+and+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnXgTC6C0tJUevlL58-gsWqG5W8axc__DaK4jWo11juOGmuK8NMlUwmro1nUOLaSSTEbalhhy8QCtAsBxMkZdSq88n7EwqD_Se6Cf0OSrELUB_tfzv7JGF_s5Np-TNK3497loyTxTT7w/s1600/Bluebells+1+and+2.jpg" height="305" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The colour change on the background is wholly down to lighting conditions when I took the photos, and my complete inability to match them from session to session! The basic colours are greens, brown, off-white, black, and three shades of blue for the flowers - all <i>Carbothello </i>pencils at this stage.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKCnF5FbpoUd0OMma9LSc-s6Ti3m6JDRDhVxcIAzZnaKGloRuqMXXVgUfX7slrbzQnU24zGqbamKJGmCnNv_RKbbo33E85AAEgy2eSIXRn5AIVpS0pdzCuXSuF698k08d09QCMcSdWWg/s1600/Bluebells+3+and+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKCnF5FbpoUd0OMma9LSc-s6Ti3m6JDRDhVxcIAzZnaKGloRuqMXXVgUfX7slrbzQnU24zGqbamKJGmCnNv_RKbbo33E85AAEgy2eSIXRn5AIVpS0pdzCuXSuF698k08d09QCMcSdWWg/s1600/Bluebells+3+and+4.jpg" height="286" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The next stage is to finish the flowers with the colours I require to make them as realistic as possible. I used <i>Sennelier </i>Blue-Violet 331-335; and Prussian 464 for the shadows among the flowers. I outlined the flowers with the background colour to verify my values, started and continued with the brass jug, which has <i>Rembrandt </i>greens, umbers and ochres; intensified the black top to the stand, worked on the facia, and began the shadows underneath. A check at this point shows me that the stems of the bluebells do not fit within the jug and will need correction.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD31BNlVk_xKvN3tmBSBnlmJqbV9YYeNV6JIzjbyrf2Q3UARvpAw2H8N1D6dR2Yf1Y2wxFiubvDmVUyBY6nYyNHnSDp0VoS7MHDT3t4-IokF6Sc6k7AvYGKP3u6CmjtVginb6PhaZAQQ/s1600/Bluebells+5+and+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD31BNlVk_xKvN3tmBSBnlmJqbV9YYeNV6JIzjbyrf2Q3UARvpAw2H8N1D6dR2Yf1Y2wxFiubvDmVUyBY6nYyNHnSDp0VoS7MHDT3t4-IokF6Sc6k7AvYGKP3u6CmjtVginb6PhaZAQQ/s1600/Bluebells+5+and+6.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I pull down the background almost to the horizon line; intensify the shadows under the stand; correct the bluebells by narrowing the stems and fractionally widening the neck of the jug. The snail starts to get a fill of greys, greens blues and Indian red (<i>Carbothello</i> again, <i>Caran d'Ache</i> umber, and <i>Rembrandt</i>). Note the dirty fingerprints on the untouched area! Tricky to keep clean when handling such dark colours, but I also know that I will cover this area later. Finally, I fill in and adjust the background with Senneliers darkest blue mixed with green, which intensifies it; the base is green and black, also blended together. Reflections are adjusted, soft pastel highlights added to the snail, and the piece is signed - and consigned to a temporary frame until I recheck it in about a month.</span>Oldenbrokehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11236081021728213825noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1468103759317346679.post-83351211411199005282015-01-14T09:18:00.000-08:002015-01-14T09:26:47.873-08:00Foo Fighters<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ok ok, I know it's an offshoot of Nirvana. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The set-up was simple - a pair of ceramic dogs on black glass, black velvet backdrop, and a carved Chinese plinth to vary the levels of the two. I photographed the set-up and converted the image in PaintshopPro to 16 colours - effectively posterizing the image. I used that image for the base drawing and blocking in. The difference in ground colour is due to the change in ambient light between photo sessions.</span><br />
